"Friendly friction"

Some things have become too easy and are now part of our default behaviours:

  • Picking up our phones reflexively.
  • Ordering fast food.
  • Saving every article we come across to read Some Day.

That all cater to our fast brains. The part that does not want to expend energy.

I am experimenting with adding some "friendly friction" into my life. Making things just a step or two harder than automatic.

Doing more manual work: Typing in a pin to open the phone again. Phoning to order that pizza. Saving the article I am reading to a file and read it there. Editing to keep the bits that interest me.

That is how I get the slow brain's attention.
