Rays of the Sun
One childhood Sunday morning the pastor had an announcement: "I made a mistake", he said.
My young ears perked up. I have never considered that one with such authority could make a mistake.
"I was two degrees off when calculating the position of the sun in Winter. The rays will come straight into our eyes. We need to move the service half an hour later during this season".
The pastor was also an architect who designed our newly built church.
My ears perked up again: The angle of the rays of the Sun could be calculated with that kind of precision? Wow.
I sat in awe of this newfound knowledge for the rest of the service: Pastors can be wrong, and the Sun's rays can be calculated.
Often, the lesson one is expected to learn is not the lesson that is learned.
