The factor to consider

Years ago, I spent many consecutive lunches visiting a knife shop with a colleague.

I was the amused and curious bystander to his soul decision: Getting a serrated or straight blade pocket knife.

His dad handed him his first pocket knife which he was still wearing daily at that point. This was the time to choose his own, he explained. It was a weighty decision with many factors at play.

After three weeks of this, he decided.
And realised he was not going to stop carrying the dad-given one.

Kind of lucky that all the factors pointed to a serrated to go with the straight he already had. Carrying two different ones instantly made sense.

Kind of luck, after all those lunch breaks where the existing knife was never a factor.
